The Nativity – a Christian Christmas symbol!

“And it came to pass in those days…” – this is how the Christmas story begins in the Gospel of Luke, a story that belongs to every Christmas celebration. By far the most well-known biblical account of Jesus’ birth, it also appears in a different version in the Gospel of Matthew. Especially during Christmas Eve services, the Christmas story is traditionally read aloud, often accompanied by a nativity play.

“While they were there, the time came for Mary to give birth, and she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger.” Very early in Christian history, this moment began to be depicted in artistic form. From the 16th century onward, Jesuits helped spread the tradition. Soon after, churches and noble households across Europe adopted the custom. The foundation for the nativity scene as we know it today was laid. Nativity sets have since become not only beloved decorations during the Advent season, but also some of the most meaningful Christian symbols.

We have assembled a set of 17 nativity figures for you. They beautifully bring to life the miracle we celebrate with the birth of Jesus. Year after year, the loving depiction of the Holy Night inspires joy anew. Nativity sets like this one are often passed down from generation to generation or given as meaningful gifts during the most festive time of the year. The Hummel nativity set was created in 2005 by the sculptors Anette Barth, Marion Huschka, and Tamara Fuchs and is modeled closely after the biblical Christmas story.
