HOT ! The Versatile Object #1 / Rimu

Here we have the Versatile Object in Rimu, a beautifully geometric piece that is as versatile as it is striking. This Versatile Object was handcrafted using a very unique piece of Rimu that was given to me by my Father, a rare large scale piece of Rimu that he had held on to for over 25 years. What a treat to use!

The Versatile Object celebrates the natural beauty of timber, the simple and clean shape shows off the unique grain, seeing the timber for what is is from all angles, long and end grain is a true delight and an insight to a precious and rare resource. The grain catches the light beautiful and will change and reflect differently as sun moves through the day.

Designed with symmetry in mind, the Versatile Object features a 210mm square seat and 70mm square legs, creating an aesthetically balanced form that feels soothing and grounded. The legs are attached using a hand carved mortise and tenon joint so it is extremely sturdy. As the timber was so chunky the seat has been made up of two pieces of timber, while the legs are a solid, single piece. The step at the base of the leg is a small 4mm deep piece of contrasting native timber.

At 200mm tall, it’s an ideal height for a variety of uses—a sturdy footstool, a unique display pedestal, or a functional side table. Each leg’s proportions echo the seat’s depth, offering a sense of cohesion and subtle elegance that will elevate any room. With its clean lines and natural tones, this piece is perfect for those who appreciate functional art and timeless design.

Goods are made using both responsibly sourced, and reclaimed native New Zealand timbers, and off-cuts.

Any and all impurities, cracks, knots, or nail holes in the timber are a sign of the natural material it is, and it\'s previous use. I consider these markings a thing of beauty, and I have preserved and included these purposely to celebrate and honour the history, age, and natural beauty of the timber.

Finish

The Stool has been finished with a food safe Osmo Top Oil with a non yellowing, clear matt finish. The information below comes from www.osmo.co.nz:

Top Oil is a transparent Hardwax Oil finish for wooden bench tops and joinery, as well as wooden coffee and dining room tables etc. Top Oil does not form a film like a polyurethane, so it cannot crack, flake, peel or blister. Dirt can easily be removed without trace.
