This elegant 19th-century flower stand is crafted from baimu (Chinese cypress) and originates from Jiangsu province in Eastern China. Traditionally known as flower stands, these pieces were designed to elevate prized porcelain vases, scholar’s objects, or arrangements of fresh flowers, allowing them to be admired at eye level while adding architectural structure to a room.
The stand features a beautifully balanced form with a square top, a lower display shelf, and an open geometric lattice platform at the base. The warm honey-brown tone of the cypress has developed a rich patina over time, highlighting the natural grain and subtle variations in the timber. The clean, refined lines reflect the restrained aesthetic typical of Jiangsu furniture, where proportion and craftsmanship were valued over excessive ornamentation.
Originally these stands were commonly produced in pairs for symmetrical interior arrangements. Today they are wonderfully versatile pieces—equally suitable as lamp tables, bedside tables, or display stands. Their narrow footprint also makes them ideal for smaller interiors, where they can be placed beside a sofa, either side of a mantelpiece, or used to highlight decorative objects.
