Offered here is an early Arts & Crafts oak table dating to approximately 1900, bearing the stamped number “169” on the underside. The table was reportedly commissioned for and sold through the Tobey Furniture Company of Chicago during the brief period when Tobey marketed Gustav Stickley’s earliest “New Furniture” designs. In 1900, Gustav Stickley entered into a short-lived arrangement with Tobey Furniture Company whereby Tobey exclusively marketed Stickley’s new Arts & Crafts designs through their Fall 1900 “New Furniture” catalogue. These pieces were not branded with Stickley’s name at the time, and many examples from this transitional period are either unmarked or bear only catalog or order numbers rather than shop stamps. The stamped number “169” on the underside is consistent with early catalog/order numbering practices used by retailers and makers at the turn of the century. As is typical for furniture sold through Tobey during this period, there is no paper label or Stickley shop mark present. The table exhibits the honest construction and straightforward design associated with the early American Arts & Crafts movement, including solid oak construction and traditional joinery. (You may wish to briefly add specific construction details here — e.g., mortise and tenon joinery, pinned stretchers, quartersawn oak, etc., if applicable.)Condition: Structurally sound, however, it could benefit from refinishing. There are a number of scratches and scuffs and light stains on the top. Please review photographs carefully. While unmarked, the form, period, and numbering align with furniture produced and sold during the 1900 Tobey/Stickley collaboration. As with many early Arts & Crafts pieces from this transitional moment, attribution is based on historical context, construction, and comparison to period catalog material rather than a factory stamp.A scarce and historically interesting example from the very beginning of the American Arts & Crafts movement.Measures approx. 40\" round and 30\" tall
