This powerfully angular bookcase was inspired by the Bauhaus designs of the 1930\'s. It is made from walnut veneers stained a beautiful nut-brown color. The shelves are placed in an asymmetrical manner, balanced and juxtaposed like the lines in a Mondrian painting. Hungary during the interwar years was a hotbed of modernist furniture design. The Hungarians had already perfected the art of making fine veneered furniture back in the Biedermeier era (the early 1800\'s). This skill transferred easily to the Art Deco style of the 1930\'s and 40\'s. Bauhaus had a completely different origin than Deco (Weimar Germany) but had a significant influence on Hungarian furniture. This bookcase, now fully restored, is an expression of that highly experimental and even radical time.
